Middle 3 Subwatershed
Home Page

The Middle 3 Subwatershed is located in the north central portion of Wayne County.  The water from the Middle One Subwatershed enters the Middle 3 at the western end of Newburgh Lake.  The river flows through an extensive park system to join the Main Rouge River near Ford Road in Dearborn Heights. The Main Rouge River flows into the Detroit River and then to Lake Erie. The Middle 3 Subwatershed includes two major impoundments at Newburgh Lake and Nankin Lake, and the Tonquish creek.

The Middle 3 Subwatershed Group (SWAG) has developed a watershed management plan in accordance with the requirements of the Michigan General Storm Water Permit. For questions or further information about the plan, send e-mail to Barry Johnson at johnsonba@cdm.com.

A Common Appendix has been developed for the subwatershed management plans. This includes detailed technical data, maps, and information best management practices for each of the seven subwatersheds.

The Middle 3 communities have cooperated to develop the Middle 3 Public Participation Plan. This document was developed to facilitate the involvement of citizens in the restoration of the Middle 3 subwatershed.

The Middle 3 Subwatershed has several member communities and agencies. Please contact on a communities' link below for additional information about that communities activities in the Rouge River Watershed.

What is a Subwatershed and where is the Middle 3?

The Rouge River Watershed is a large drainage area, (about 466 square miles) where a drop of water that falls anywhere in the watershed will flow to the Rouge River and eventually enter the Detroit River near Lake Erie. The drainage area includes 48 communities and parts of 3 counties. To manage the large area more effectively, local units of governments decided to divide the Rouge River Watershed into seven subwatersheds. There are two subwatersheds on the Main Branch of the Rouge River, two on the Middle Branch, two on the Lower Branch and one on the Upper Branch.

The Middle 3 is one of these subwatersheds. Check out the map below. Do you live, work, go to school, play in any of these areas?

If you do, then your actions impact the water that drains through the Middle 3 Subwatershed.

Vision of the Middle 3 Subwatershed

The Vision statement developed by the Middle 3 Subwatershed Advisory Group is:

A Middle Rouge River and river corridor that is aesthetically pleasant, clean, and safe so that watershed residents and visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities including fishing, canoeing and picnicking, and that supports a healthy and diverse wildlife community.

The enjoyment of recreational activities such as fishing, canoeing, picnicking, bird watching, photography, and nature walks is influenced by scenic quality and water quality. The Middle 3 Vision proposes enhancing the opportunities for recreational activities associated with the local waterways.

To accomplish this Vision, the communities in the Middle 3 Subwatershed are developing new methods to improve public understanding and appreciation of the watercourses and open spaces. The communities are working together to restore stream water quality and enhance the aesthetic character of recreational opportunities associated with the surface waters in the Middle 3 Subwatershed.

How Can the Public Get Involved in Restoring the Middle 3 Rouge River?

If you are interested in helping to restore and protect the Rouge River, there are many ways to get involved. See the How to Get Involved page of this Web site for ideas and attend the meetings listed on the Upcoming Meetings and Events. The communities in the Middle 3 Subwatershed have developed a Public Participation Process to seek the involvement of the public in planning for improvements to the Middle 3 Rouge River. Please let us know what you think is important and take advantage of the public sessions, comment directly to members of the Middle 3 Subwatershed Advisory Group or send us a message on this Web site.
