Mobile Metropark
Learning Center
GENERAL OVERVIEW
The Mobile Metropark Learning Center is a vital addition to HCMA's
already popular naturalist outreach program serving Wayne, Oakland,
Macomb, Washtenaw, and Livingston counties. It is offered primarily
to communities, schools and related groups who may not have the
means or opportunity to visit the Metroparks.
The programs are designed to foster a better understanding and
appreciation of the value of natural and cultural history. They
also encourage people to visit Metroparks and use the interpretive
centers and other recreational facilities provided by the HCMA.
Programs are constructed around a central theme with an
emphasis on natural or cultural history and may be appropriate to
the season. Naturalist encourage hands-on activities along with
group participation and interactive discussions to enhance the effectiveness
of the program.
When scheduling your appointment, you may request a program topic
from among several being offered at the time of year during which
your visit is to take place.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
You are allowed only ONE visit by the Mobile Metropark Learning
Center per school year. You may select the program of your choice
from those being offered at the time of your visit.
During this ONE visit you must have at least three but no more then
four classes scheduled.
Each class must have at least 20 students in attendance. The Mobile
Metropark Learning Center can accommodate a maximum of 32 students.
A teacher must be in attendance at all times.
Each class will last between 40 to 45 minutes. We request that these
classes are scheduled back to back.
Programs will be scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays.
PREFERRED TIME
The preferred time for programs is as follows:
1st 9:30 - 10:30
2nd 10:30 - 11:30
3rd 11:30 - 12:30
4th 12:30 - 1:30 (if requested)
Please try to work around your lunch period to accommodate this
format.
BEFORE A PROGRAM CAN BE SCHEDULED
Because of the size of the Mobile Metropark Learning Center, a
visit to the school site is necessary before the presentation is
scheduled. This pre-visit will allow us to assess not only the route
to the program site, but the site itself. Criteria to be considered
includes: power line heights; proximity to trees and other structures;
access to the school along side streets from main thoroughfares;
gates, driveways and parking lots; and any other potential concerns.
WHAT IS REQUIRED
A minimum clearance of 14 feet in height, 12 feet in width, and
adequate room to safely maneuver the 60 foot Mobile Metropark Learning
Center around the program site will be required. The unit is a self-contained
mobile facility, and thus does not require any hookups at the program
site. We will need p30 to 45 minutes to set up and equal time to
pack up the unit upon completion of the program. It is because of
this, and with safety foremost in our minds, that the Mobile Metropark
Learning Center will not arrive until school is in session and must
leave 30 minutes before afternoon dismissal. This will allow us
to enter and leave the site when student activity would be at its
lowest.
