Specific Grant Programs


Subwatershed Grants for General Permit
Wayne County, through its Rouge River National Wet Weather Demonstration Project, will provide federal grant funding over a four-year period to support communities and agencies within the Rouge watershed in meeting their requirements under the Michigan DEQ Voluntary Storm Water General Permit (MIG610000). Two rounds of grants are currently planned. The first round includes $3.5 million of grants. Grant funded projects will begin in July 1999. Informational meetings were held in December 1998. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Projects
Grant money was available for various GIS projects, including: collecting and converting data, purchasing computer hardware and software and training personnel to utilize GIS.

Storm Water Projects
This grant was available to design and implement various storm water projects. Such projects include: detention pond planning, design or construction; streambank stabilization; storm water infrastructure management; public education programs; pond restoration; and flood control projects.

Recreation and Habitat Projects
This grant was awarded to plan, design or implement projects related to increasing recreational opportunities or habitat along the Rouge River.

Septage/Waste Management
This grant was awarded to support various aspects of septage/waste management including: public education, training, technical databases, and household hazardous waste collection.

Wetland Projects
This grant was preliminarily awarded to various wetland projects. Specific examples include: fish passages; streambank stabilization (using methods that also provide habitat improvement); wetlands creation or restoration; stream restoration; and fish stocking.
