Middle 3 Rouge Storm Water Management Area

Hydrology.  At Inkster Road (US2) the mean streamflow recorded in 2002 was one of the three lowest recorded since 1994 and at Hines/Ford (D06) the mean streamflow was the lowest recorded since 1994.  The mean streamflow at Inkster Road (US2) was 72 percent of the 1994 through 2001 average and at Hines/Ford (D06) the mean streamflow was 57 percent of the 1994 through 2001 average.  At both stream gages in the Middle 3 (US2 and D06), the mean streamflow during the 2000 monitoring period remained the highest of any year recorded since 1994.  In the Middle 3 since 1994, 2000 remained the wettest season on record and 2002 was the driest season on record. The precipitation total in 2002 was 62 percent of the long-term average precipitation total for 1994 through 2001.

Water Quality.  Continuous DO and water temperature monitoring has been preformed in the Middle 3 SWMA at Hines Drive near Ford Road (D06) since 1994.  DO concentrations have been poor at this location with the DO frequently dropping below the State water quality standard of 5 mg/L, particularly during wet weather conditions.  Trend analysis results show an improving trend for both wet and dry weather conditions with substantial improvement in 2002 when the mean DO increased by nearly 1.0 mg/L from previous years and the percent of values greater that the State standard of 5 mg/L was 99 percent.  Continuous temperature monitoring did not exceed a maximum temperature of 29.4°C (85 °F).

E. coliIn general, E. coli bacteria levels have been poor in the Middle 3 where a substantial percentage of measurements taken since 1994 have been above the State water quality standards for both total and partial body contact recreation.  Overall, concentrations of E. coli bacteria are improving in the Middle 3 SWMA, particularly during wet weather.  Although improving, several locations are still not meeting the State water quality standards for partial body contact recreation.
