Brown Trout Succeeding in Rouge
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently conducted
a fish survey in the Rouge River. One exciting discover was this
17 inch, 5 year old brown trout they caught during the survey of
Johnson Creek.
The reason this is exciting is that brown trout are a "cold water
fish", which means water quality has to be high, and stream temperatures
low in order for them to survive. The age of this fish is evidence
that brown trout can survive for extended periods in Johnson Creek,
perhaps long enough to reproduce. This is very electrifying news!
The challenge will be to make sure that resource protection steps
are taken to protect this valuable Creek to insure the trout continue
to flourish.
